Disclaimer & Garment Care
Last updated: 31 October 2026
At House of Ellwood, we believe that thoughtful care helps your favourite pieces stay in your wardrobe for longer. The right washing, drying and storage methods help preserve their appearance, shape and comfort.
Always follow the care label attached to your garment. Product-specific instructions take priority over the general guidance below.
1. Washing & Fabric Care
Each fabric requires a different approach. Check the care label before washing, including whether the garment is suitable for machine washing.
For machine-washable items:
- Use the temperature and cycle specified on the care label.
- Turn garments inside out where appropriate.
- Choose a detergent suitable for the fabric.
- Separate light and dark colours.
- Avoid overloading the washing machine.
- Use a laundry bag for delicate items where appropriate.
Avoid bleach unless expressly permitted by the care label. Excessive heat, unsuitable detergents and vigorous washing or spinning can cause shrinkage, fading or damage.
2. Drying & Storage
Following the correct drying method helps garments retain their shape.
- Tumble dry only when the care label permits it.
- Reshape and dry knitwear flat where instructed.
- Allow garments to dry completely before storing them.
- Fold knitwear and heavy jumpers to help prevent stretching.
- Use suitable hangers for coats, jackets and other garments designed to be hung.
- Store clothing in a clean, dry and well-ventilated space.
- Use breathable garment covers for delicate pieces where appropriate.
Avoid overcrowding your wardrobe or leaving garments tightly compressed for extended periods.
3. Heat, Sunlight & Moisture
Excessive heat, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions can affect certain fabrics.
To protect your clothing:
- Keep stored garments away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Avoid damp or poorly ventilated storage areas.
- Follow the care label’s drying instructions.
- Do not place wet garments directly onto radiators unless the product instructions specifically allow it.
4. Choosing Your Size
A comfortable fit begins with the right measurements.
Please review the size guide on each product page before ordering. Sizing can vary between styles, and fabric composition may affect stretch and fit.
Keep in mind:
- Relaxed, oversized, regular and slim-fit styles are designed to fit differently.
- Check whether the size guide gives body measurements or garment measurements.
- Compare the relevant measurements with your own or with a similar garment that fits well.
- Clothing that is excessively tight may place additional strain on seams and fastenings.
For help with available sizing information, email info@houseofellwood.com.
5. Stain Removal, Ironing & Cleaning
Before treating a stain or applying heat, check the garment’s care instructions.
- Treat stains promptly using a method suitable for the fabric.
- Test suitable cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first.
- Avoid vigorous rubbing, which may damage fibres or spread the stain.
- Use the ironing temperature indicated on the label.
- Avoid ironing directly over prints, embellishments, embroidery or fastenings.
- Use steam only where suitable for the fabric.
- Take garments labelled “Dry Clean Only” to a professional cleaner.
- Avoid prolonged soaking unless permitted by the care instructions.
If you are unsure how to clean a delicate or unfamiliar fabric, seek advice from a professional cleaner.
6. Product Images, Colours & Measurements
We take reasonable care to represent our products accurately through photographs, descriptions and size information.
Please note:
- Screen settings and lighting can affect how colours appear.
- Photographs may not fully convey a fabric’s texture.
- Small measurement variations may occur.
- A garment’s appearance and fit depend on individual proportions and the intended cut.
These points do not limit your right to receive goods that match their description and meet applicable quality requirements. If you believe an item differs materially from its description, please contact us.
7. Delicate & Speciality Garments
Knitwear, embellished pieces, delicate fabrics and structured outerwear may require additional care.
- Follow all product-specific cleaning instructions.
- Avoid unnecessary friction, pulling or stretching.
- Handle buttons, embroidery and decorative details carefully.
- Store items in a way that protects their construction.
- Use specialist cleaning services where recommended.
Do not assume that garments with a similar appearance can be washed or dried in the same way.
8. Safety & Responsible Use
- Keep plastic packaging and small detachable components away from babies and young children.
- Check for damaged fastenings, loose components or excessive wear.
- Stop using an item if a damaged component presents a safety risk.
- Follow any safety warnings supplied with the product.
If you notice a possible product safety issue, contact info@houseofellwood.com with your order number and details of the concern.
9. Garment Care Disclaimer
This page provides general guidance. The appropriate care method depends on each garment’s fabric, construction and finish.
